Armageddon

Encamped along the hills of light,Ye Christian soldiers, rise,And press the battle ere the nightShall veil the glowing skies.Against the foe in vales belowLet all our strength be hurled;Faith is the victory, we know,That overcomes the world. . . .

Then onward from the hills of light,Our hearts with love aflame,We’ll vanquish all the hosts of night,In Jesus’ conqu’ring name.

— Faith is the Victory, by John H. Yates (1891)

After reposing with our Bridegroom in His heavenly home of light, the church returns with King Jesus to battle the Beast and his armies in the great conflict between good and evil — the Battle of Armageddon!

You may ask: What causes the Battle of Armageddon? What will be accomplished at Armageddon? And, what changes to earth’s topography will happen at Armageddon?

What Causes the Battle of Armageddon?

During the wrath of the Lamb, the 144,000 or “all of the chosen thousands” of national Israel will come to faith in Jesus Christ as their Messiah. This will spark the anger of Christ’s enemy, the Antichrist. Consequently, the Antichrist will gather his armies from “all the nations” (Zechariah 12:3) to attack these Messianic Jews at Jerusalem, prompting their cry to the Lord for help and persuading King Jesus to return with the church from heaven to earth to fight for Israel. St. John declares:

I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse, and He who sat on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and wages war. His eyes are a flame of fire. . . . And the armies which are in heaven . . . were following Him on white horses (Revelation 19:11,12,14).

When the true King of the Jews, Jesus Christ, sets foot back on earth, “on the Mount of Olives, which is in front of Jerusalem on the east” (Zechariah 14:4), the 144,000 or “all of the chosen thousands” of modern national Israel will cheer, and weep with tears of joy over Him like a long lost son returning home. Old Testament prophet Zechariah foretells:

They will look on Me [Jesus] whom they have pierced; and they will mourn for Him, as one mourns for an only son, and they will weep bitterly over Him like the bitter weeping over a firstborn. . . . And one will say to him, “What are these wounds between your arms?” Then He will say, “Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.” (vss. 12:10;13:6)

Then Jesus will go forth to fight for Israel, destroying all the nations that have come against Jerusalem in the great Battle of Armageddon:

In that day I [Jesus] will set about to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem. . . . For I will gather all the nations against Jerusalem to battle [Armageddon]. . . . Then the Lord will go forth and fight against those nations, as when He fights on a day of battle. (Zechariah 12:9; 14:2,3)

The Antichrist and his armies from all nations will expect to destroy the Lord’s people at Jerusalem but their wicked plans will be foiled.
